I Never Sang For My Father...Oh Wait, Yes, I Did!

I know I don't usually post on Sundays, but today is Father's Day and I
want to make sure my Dad knows how much I love him. I had hoped to be
with him today, but it just didn't work out. I don't know who is more
disappointed: him or me.

When I was young, my family sang
everywhere, my Dad's booming bass carrying us all with him as we
musically explored blue moons and harvest moons, sang the praises of
sweet Adeline and Amazing Grace, and kept an eagle eye out for what was
comin' round the mountain.

We sang in the car on the way home. We
sang at picnics and cookouts. And, most poignantly, we sang (and
continue to sing) together at the Sunday night community sings in Leland
Michigan. I so look forward to attending those every Sunday night I am
home in Michigan. It is something my Dad and I share in a very special
way and I treasure every minute I can twine my alto around the bass line
of his harmonies.

A few years back I wrote an essay about the
Sing. I would like to repeat it here today in tribute to fathers
everywhere who daily pass on their wisdom and love to countless
generations, but most especially in honor of my Dad, who had so much to
do with who I have grown to be. I love you Dad! This one's for you.

PROFOUND PRAYER

This
is a love letter. It is sentimental; it is passionate; it is true. It
admits no flaws (or overlooks them), it is infatuated with the beloved
in all its beauty and grace, and seeks only to sit a while, reveal its
wonders, and revel in its presence.

There is a place I know where
time stands still, where the north wind breathes softly across the
lake, and the summer never ends. It is a magical place, an enchanted
peninsula, a small spit of land surrounded by water and riddled with
freshwater lakes so pure and innocent that you can see clear to the
bottom of their soul.

Lake Michigan whispers in the foggy dawn
and sparkles in the sun at midday, when the children run shrieking with
the shock of cold water on their legs. The span of beach goes on for
miles, broken only by chalky bluffs and towering dunes. The white sand
sifts between your toes and cradles your arches – warm and soft as the
inside of a cat’s ear, as the downy head of a newborn babe, as a kind
word on an angry day.

It is a place of gently rolling hills,
stretching their way to the horizon or the lake - whichever comes first.
It is a land of cherry orchards, ablaze with budding May promise, heavy
in summer with the fruitfulness born of hard labor. Some years the land
is harsh and farmers’ children go hungry to bed, praying to God for the
cool days and abundant rain that make Daddy smile. But always the land
is there; the land is eternal; the land is everything.

This is a
place where God is found in every crooked twig and every rocky shore,
every call of the great horned owl and every pulse of the land. This is a
place where deer graze, and stars blaze, and children still run to
catch fireflies in mayonnaise jars while their elders sit on the porch
sipping something tall and cool, catching up on all the family gossip.

It
is a place where parents sing their children to sleep beneath sighing
pines, with the same songs their grandparents sang to them so many
lifetimes ago. It is place that many visit, but few call home. It is a
place where the greatest treasures to be found are not gold or silver,
nor even bluestone or seagull feather. The greatest treasures of this
realm lie deep within the human heart – love, peace, joy, family, and
remembrance.

This is as close as I shall come to Eden during my
lifetime. This is the place my parents and their parents before them
bequeathed to me. This is where my grandparents rest and where my father
makes his home. This is the place my children grew up. This is the
place where I will grow old. This is the land my heart calls home.

It
is 7:45 on a warm July evening. I sit in the old wooden clubhouse at
the top of the hill. The golf course spreads out before me in the waning
sunlight, golden in what my children call the “magic” hours. Every
evening about 6:00, the wind drops, the lake calms, and the entire world
takes on a warm glow, as if God had touched the world, put a finger to
his lips and whispered “Hush.” These are the best times for water skiing
(no waves), beach picnics (no wind), and long walks with your husband
(no stress).

The room fills as the clock hands inch closer to
8:00. The “summer” people and the year round residents have come
together for one of the most cherished traditions of the summer – the
Sunday Night Sing. Grandmothers and older gentlemen get the seats
nearest the open doors, along with those who have babies in tow. The
elderly seek the fresh air that blows through the French doors; the new
parents value the quick exit they provide in case of newborn meltdown.

The
Sing is one of the only places I know where a voluntary dress code is
still in current practice. I see young mothers decked out in Lily
Pulitzer sundresses and strappy sandals, their blonde hair smooth and
gleaming like a Clairol magazine ad. They chat with their friends about
things like play dates, sandcastles, and tennis games. Men stop to
visit, kibbutz, discuss how long they are staying this time before
returning to the daily grind of the real world, and exchange golf
scores, business tips, and fish stories.

Children walk quietly
(at least while Mom and Dad are watching) to take their rightful spaces
down front, where they can get in on all the action. Their hair is
combed; their clothes are clean. The boys wear polo shirts and the girls
wear patent leather Mary Janes. All wear innocence, and the suntanned
glow of long summer days spent in the country, on the water. I have
always maintained and here declare it officially: there are no kids
anywhere on earth more attractive than the kids at the Sunday Night
Sing.

Of course, every rule has an exception. The teen contingent
shows little regard for the conventions of their elders. They wear tank
tops and shorts, baggy sweatshirts and jeans. They line the scarred
tables at the back of the hall, sitting with their backs against the
wall, swinging their legs in rhythm, sharing secrets, smiling, flirting,
out from under the watchful eye of their parents for an hour. As long
as they are quiet, no one will turn around to check up on them. They
perch on the tables like birds on a wire, waiting for the singing to
start and their blessed hour of comparative privacy to commence.

It
is eight o’clock. The piano plays and the strains of our national
anthem float across the hall. As one, all stand; many place their hands
over their heart, a few older gentlemen salute, and we begin to sing.
The patriotic fervor that to so many in this cynical age seems laughable
is everywhere in evidence here. These are good people, fortunate
people, people who are glad to live in this country. And they are not
ashamed of old ways. After all, the community sings have endured for
almost 100 years.

We sing old songs - the ones our parents sang
before us. We sing show tunes like Eidelweiss and Oklahoma by Rodgers
and Hammerstein, folk songs like Puff the Magic Dragon, and This Land is
Your Land. For the children’s sake, we do Bingo, and The Three Little
Fishies, and She’ll Be Comin’ Round the Mountain (with all the
appropriate hand gestures). Everyone groans when someone requests Green
Grow the Rushes (all twelve verses – sigh!) but all seem to enjoy
Capitol Ship with its nonsensical lyrics and Waltzing Matilda with its
liberal use of Australian slang.

Looking out the windows, I see a
few lone boys – solitary escapees from their mother’s scrutiny - let
go, no doubt, due to their incessant squirming and nonstop chatter. They
chase each other back and forth across the putting green and play with
the golf ball washers as my brother and I did once upon a long ago time.

So
little has changed since we were children. No one stands up when we
sing Dixie anymore – all the rebels have gone to meet their maker – and
the songbooks have been rebound, thanks to someone’s generous gift. But
the voices still rise in the still summer air, undisturbed by the sound
of air-conditioning. The children still laugh and play; the parents
still sing with gusto, helping the younger crowd to learn the words; the
grandparents still knit and visit, and look out in peace upon the place
and the people they love. The generations have turned, but the memories
and traditions remain.

As we approach the end of the hour, the
mood mellows and deepens as we sing lullabies - Sweet and Low and All
Through the Night, which has a special hold on my heart; it is what I
sang my children to sleep with when they were very young. We follow up
with the old songs of grace and faith – Jacob’s Ladder, All Night, All
Day, and The Little Brown Church in the Vale.

When I sing the
words, “No spot is so dear to my childhood as the little brown church in
the vale,” I remember my mother, dead these last eight years, sitting
contentedly beside me, long before the cruel reality of divorce and
alcoholism took her youth; and my grandmother, her voice strong and
clear, belying her age and girth, singing the low descant, “Oh come,
come, come, . . “

It’s that kind of a place. The kind of place
where I meet my ancestors and my childhood at every turn of the path,
and imagine the future - when my children will bring their families to
the lake - every time I wish upon a star. In these days of transient
populations and MTV induced attention spans, there is something holy
about a place where you have put down roots - a place where your
children play with the offspring of your childhood friends - a place
where I am still known by my maiden name, where I am still the carefree
girl with skinned knees and sneakers full of sand. A place where I am
most me.

As we launch into The Leelanau Song, written expressly
for the Sunday Night Sing so many years ago and still sung every week
without fail, I remember the summer my grandmother wouldn’t let me go
home until I had memorized all the words to three verses and a chorus. I
remember her teaching me to swim on sunny days and how to knit and play
a mean hand of gin rummy on rainy ones. I remember her smile, and her
lap, and her love.

She and my grandfather first came to this
place in the ‘30’s. I have come every summer of my life save one - in
college, when I was unable to get any time off from my summer job. They
found the land, and built the house, and brought my father and my Aunt
Kathy here so many summers ago. My grandmother planted the gardens, full
of hollyhocks, phlox, and old-fashioned lilacs; ripe red raspberries

What we want is nothing less

Than the dream behind this land,

A country where each person counts

And gets a helping hand.

And we who’ve been given much,

We can sing this simple song,

“We can keep this gift alive by passing it along”.

When the shadows get too near.

- Mark Twain

First off, I want to thank Kristin Kay for providing a well deserved & much needed swift kick in the pants. She PM'd me this morning on Ravelry and asked the question to which all of you have been wanting an answer for months:

When are you going to fulfill your obligations to your Two Towers subscribers and finish the series?

The answer is: as quickly as possible. And I will not release any other patterns until I finish these.

Several things changed about a year ago, which threw my usual release schedule severely out of whack. My husband got a higher paying job and without paying college tuition, our financial picture eased up, so I was no longer so dependent upon a new pattern every month to pay the bills. I eased up on myself & found it hard to go back to work once I had grown unaccustomed to my previous frenetic pace.

Our youngest son, who had been living with us for the past year, got a nighttime job and moved out on his own, but was unable to afford night time care for his 3yo son. So we stepped in and began caring for him in the afternoons & evenings. This increased my grandma time and reduced my designer time. I could knit while he was here, but not on anything terribly complicated. And I can spin (more on this later) But 5 nights a week with a toddler who insists on sitting in your lap really cuts into the time.

Once he moved out, we began working on our current house, in which we have lived for the past 30 years; cleaning out closets, tearing down wallpaper, painting, replacing appliances, updating the kitchen, packing up the studio, etc. It has been a real whopper of a task and one which my husband feels I don't give enough time to. We are close to being ready and hope to get the house on the market in February.

At the same time, we are traveling north for a series of meetings with the architect in Michigan on the design of the new house and studio. It is so exciting to be moving forward finally on our 9 acres of God's country.

I broke my hand in January and was unable to knit for 3 months, while it healed, which put me even farther behind. And I have been working on projects that require the completion of the entire garment, rather than a repeatable motif that can be vetted in a brief amount of time and photographed in a half-completed state.

I took time for professional enrichment and networking, traveling extensively this spring & summer, attending retreats & taking classes. I knit some other people's patterns, which I had not done in 5 years, and carefully studied some alternative techniques and methods of construction.

I learned to spin while my hand was in a cast and will be launching Spinspiration, a new series of patterns that will include directions for both spinning & knitting the finished objects, in 2013, after I finish the Two Towers series. I have been working on these projects concurrently with the LotR patterns, so I can get them into testing. There will be more information about this forthcoming.

Rohan was ready to go in May, but I figured no one was going to want to knit on a big pile of Fair Isle in the heat of the summer, so I put her on the back burner till Fall. Pattern has been fully tested and will go to proofreader this week. Here are some pictures to whet your appetite.

Ringwraith is also completely through the testing process and will be out later this month.

Emyn Muil is about halfway finished. I redesigned the piece when I picked it up again this summer, swapping the Madelinetosh lace for Brooklyn Tweed's Loft for a more rustic appearance. I love the many subtle colors in the yarn (I used Meteorite) I also changed the shape of the shawl from a triangle to a crescent and added a bottom border. Now the shawlette is much closer to what I had envisioned. It has a Shetland feel to it and I can't wait to share it with you. It heads into testing next week. I wanted to be sure I had a full half shawl lead on my test knitters, so I can stay ahead of them as they work on the first half and I complete the second.

Once that is done, I will move on to Eowyn (twisted stitch. lace up gauntlets) Eleventy Seven (lace scarf in black metallic handspun) and

I have been a terrible procrastinator and hermit. I stopped blogging to let you all know what was going on. I stopped posting updates on the boards of Ravelry. I haven't sent out a newsletter in months. I have been, at times, dreadfully non-responsive to email. I have continued to design & produce, but not to publish and notify.

I have been struggling with a recurrence of the depression that dogged me several years back. Life has been very busy this year and I am not a good multi-tasker. All too often, when faced with the question of "do I work on the house today, or work on Sunflower Designs?", I have chosen to put my head down and knit (or spin).

When I feel overwhelmed I do what my family refers to as "ostriching". I bury my head in the sand (or in this case the fiber & yarn) and ignore the rest of the world. It is a long established coping mechanism of mine. I don't know if it is healthy, but I do know it is annoying to those with whom I interact: my family, my friends, and most of all, my customers.

Add in some unmentionable family drama and you get...

silence.

And for that I most humbly beg your pardon. All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful:
The Lord God made them all.

He wasn't the biggest kitten in his litter. He wasn't the most playful. But when my youngest son brought him to me in his arms & told me, "I think this is the one, Mom." the kitten looked up at us & licked my son's cheek. I knew he was ours.

He was a small kitten, just a little smidgen of fur, so we named him Pippin, after the musical of the same name. It just seemed right for a little pip of a cat: diminutive, affectionate, adorable, just like its owner.

When he was young, my sons fought over who got to hold him, dropping the kitten onto the floor in the process. No one was the winner in that little altercation, but Pip was definitely the loser, coming away from it with a green stick fracture in one of his hind legs. We rushed him to the vet, who put a splint on his tiny leg and reassured us it would heal clean.

It really wasn't funny but we had to laugh anyway, as the kitten ran in circles at first, due to the fact that he had two working legs on one side of his body and only one on the other. Soon enough however he got the hang of it, & ran all over the house, dragging his splint behind him like a fishtail waving through water.

He showed early on that he was a "people" cat. His favorite curl up spot was in the hood of my sweatshirt, riding around the house on my back as I did my daily chores. He always wanted to be where we were, a trait that defined him in later life.

Siamese cats are talky cats. They meow incessantly. Pippin was our fourth Siamese & easily the most voluble. From the moment we arose in the AM to the time we turned out the light, he was wherever we were, telling us he was hungry, he was thirsty, he was tired, he wanted us to sit down so he could curl up in our laps. There is actually a video on YouTube that my brother-in-law put up when feeding him while we were away on a vacation. It begins & ends with Pippin standing on his hind legs at the screen door, meowing into the garage at whoever was coming and it doesn't let up in between either. He was a Chatty Cathy of a feline.

He spent many hours curled in my lap as I built Sunflower Designs. He was very well behaved, mostly leaving the yarn alone as I worked, but occasionally reminding me he was, after all, a cat. He just couldn't resist the temptation of the dangling needle cable in front of his face for one second longer. The only time he was a bad yarnie's kitty was when I left a small ball of fingering or lace-weight lying around overnight. Then I would awaken to an astonishing display of string art that wound throughout the entire house, upstairs & down, until it ended in a tail end or the cavernous reaches beneath the couch in the living room.

My mother spent prodigious amounts of money on her cats, including one that suffered from Feline Leukemia, sending him to Purdue's Veterinary School labs in the search for a cure. I did not understand. "It's just a cat." I said to my husband. I have had friends who mourned the passing of their animals for weeks & months & to a certain extent, years. "It's just a cat. " I thought to myself. We had to get rid of our oldest cat when our first child was born, as she peed on every surface of his belongings in protest. Although I cried, I reminded myself that, after all, she was "just a cat" and we had a baby to protect.

I will never use those words again.

Monday Pippin was alive. Yesterday he died. Today we buried him at the wood's edge, on our nine Michigan acres where he will remain with us always.

We did all we could but in the end it was not enough. The Vet thinks it was a brain tumor.

Pippin gave us everything he had to give. Unconditional love verging on adoration. He greeted us at the back door whenever we returned home. He followed us from room to room. He comforted me when I was upset, licking the tears off my cheeks. He waited patiently on the bath mat in the mornings while my husband showered, nipping at his ankles or licking his feet when he got out.

On Sunday night he lay stretched out upon my husband's chest, his right paw curling around Scott's neck as Scott lay on the couch. Scott looked at me and sighed, "It doesn't get much better than this."

He seized on Monday night with no warning whatsoever. After a late night run to the emergency clinic, he returned home to us overnight. We wrapped him in a towel & placed him on the bed between us so we could both watch over him and love him. He seized again on Tuesday morning and never fully regained bodily control. I held his paw and stroked his neck as the vet administered his final injection. I can only hope in the end he knew he was loved by us as much as he loved us.

Row 66 of Slip Stitch Chart
You only want to do the decrease at the outside edges of each of the
14 wedges. On the inner reps of the pattern (between the black lines)
knit those stitches.

This should give you 3 reps of the 8 st pattern for a wedge total of 24 sts.

I originally had the decreases a row below (in error) and didn’t
catch that when I moved them in (per test knitter’s notes) that that
placed the last set within the black rep lines. Sorry bout that.
I will invoice you through PayPal and ship them out to your hot little hands by midweek.Fiber will be shipped first class mail in a padded envelope if the total weight is 13 oz. or less. If fiber weighs more than that, I will ship in flat rate priority mail box for $11.35 or $15.45. By next week you should be happy spinning!

All fiber colors are true (on my monitor- can't account for yours.) We are a non smoking household, but I do have one cat. Fiber has been behind closed doors, so cat contact has been minimal.

Please give my fiber a loving home and a productive future.

Ready?

Here we go again...Susan Pandorfhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13067155501209751519noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6659222299931442866.post-14529388308284638512012-03-10T15:51:00.005-05:002012-03-10T19:24:46.815-05:00We're having a KAL!
"Life is what happens while you're making other plans."

John Lennon

The cast is off! Yay! I still have to wear a brace, but can type and knit again! The last 6 weeks have been interesting, to say the least. Had I known life was going to force me to slow down, I would not have taken my sabbatical in the Fall.

I have now hit the ground running. Finished pattern for Helm's Deep is heading to the proofreader tomorrow, Rohan is close behind, and Ringwraith will head into testing this coming week (drop me an email if you are interested in test knitting).

Thank you to everyone for your well wishes and most especially your patience with me. This results in a st count of 23 per chart. Row 57 as written calls for 22 sts, leaving an additional st. The question is whether to omit the YOs in row 55 or add a corresponding decrease in row 57.

I have gone all the way back to my Neibling source material in German to find the answer. I have tried to see what I did in my original and cannot make an accurate determination.

I think either one works, but assuming you have already completed row 55, just do decreases in row 57, sts 1, as follows:

Chart 3, row 57, st 1 should be k2tog.
Chart 4, row 57, st 104 should be SSK.

Chart 3, row 57 should begin: k2 tog, k1, yo, ktbl, yo, k2, yo, sk2p, yo, k2, yo, ktbl, yo k2, ssk, k2, yo, ktbl, yo, k2, k2tog

Chart 4, row 57 should end: ssk, k2, yo, ktbl, yo, k2, k2tog, k2, yo, ktbl, yo, k2, yo, sk2p, yo, k2, yo, ktbl, yo, k1, SSK

Sorry this took me so long to figure out…

Susan Pandorfhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13067155501209751519noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6659222299931442866.post-87652427560768716932012-03-07T11:16:00.000-05:002012-03-07T11:16:52.159-05:00KONY 2012Susan Pandorfhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13067155501209751519noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6659222299931442866.post-12772102261450637882012-01-27T11:39:00.002-05:002012-01-27T11:48:03.278-05:00Susan Update

"Every now and then go away, have a little relaxation, for when you come back to your work your judgment will be surer. Took some personal time off recently - had pushed for over 3 years, working 60 hrs wk, putting out over 60 patterns.

I began yoga classes & cardio, knit something for me (what a concept), helped son get back on his feet by providing daycare to grandson, and learned to spin. All necessary to my mental health & continued artistic inspiration. Consider it a sabbatical.

I have continued working on Two Towers patterns through out the past 4 months - Helm’s Deep needs to be written up & proofed, Rohan is completed & waiting on final notes from tester who is finishing hers. Ringwraith is heading into test knit.

I really hope the hand isn’t broken - waiting for doc to return call w/ xray info. Typing this with left hand & index finger on right - hunt & peck...

If it is broken, may have to push back start date for Mithril KAL from Feb. 4th, but will try to get someone else to write up patterns so y’all don’t have to wait any longer. I think my tech editor can write them, possibly.

Will keep you posted. Now I am going to rest my swollen hand & hope I didn't just take myself out of commission - gulp

Susan Pandorfhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13067155501209751519noreply@blogger.com10
